How to build a team for a growth company that takes business to the next level
The team is the heart of a growth company. In the midst of rapid growth, the ability to build a whole, where recruitment, collaboration and culture go hand in hand, is key. As the business evolves, so must the team - in a clear direction, with mutually agreed rules and mutual support.
Building a team is never just a series of individual recruitments. It is a deliberate and purposeful recruitment process that combines planning, time management and a vision of the skills and roles the organisation needs now and in the future. This is particularly important in a growth company - even small recruitment decisions can affect team dynamics and direction well into the future.
Define what the next level of growth requires
Before you start looking for new team members, stop and think: what is really needed at this stage?
What is the objective of growth? Where do you want to be in three, six or twelve months? Once the direction is clear, you can identify the skills required. It could be understanding new business models, understanding customers, scaling up or building new models of collaboration.
A good team is not just a bunch of good individuals, but a combination of mutually supportive skills and approaches.
This is also where the importance of a common language and objectives is highlighted. When everyone understands where they are going and why, decision-making and action are significantly accelerated.
Recruit for potential, not just experience
In the everyday life of a growth company, people often look for a "mix of skills". The perfect CV does not always exist, which is why it is important to be able to look beyond the surface.
What kind of attitudes, learning skills and motivation does the person bring? Is he or she ready to grow with the role and take responsibility in a changing situation? And how well does the person work with others, especially when things don't go according to plan?
A good recruitment partner will help to make visible potential that may not be visible at first glance. And most importantly; it also helps to identify where there is no room for compromise.
Build the basis for cooperation before the first day of work
A successful team is not built in the first week. It starts at the recruitment stage.
How do you describe the task? Who is involved in the process? How do you communicate to the candidate that this team is genuinely interested in how things are done and what goals are being pursued?
A good candidate experience is created through encounters that are human, clear and constructive. And once selected, it is clear from the first contact that they have been welcomed as part of the whole.
It is also important that the first week of work does not come as a surprise. A well-planned induction will not only help you learn the job, but also help you get accustomed to the culture.
Stop at team performance
Once new people have started and the business is rolling along, you may forget to ask: are we really working as a team?
In our experience, the best teams have room for discussion, feedback and role development. Everyone feels that their work is part of the whole and that they can make a difference. These are the factors that create commitment, growth and measurable results.
